Melvin Waki has been raising orchids for more than 40 years in his backyard in Aiea.  He grows primarily dendrobiums, cattleyas, phalaenopsis, vandas, bulbophyllums  and tolumnias. He is a certified orchid judge for the Honolulu Orchid Society and Honorary  Member of the Aiea Orchid Club  and Honolulu Orchid Society. He is a past president of  the Aiea Orchid Club and currently a Trustee of the Aiea Orchid Club and 1st Vice President of the Honolulu Orchid Society. He grew up in Waimanalo on a farm above H&R Nurseries. He graduated from Kailua High School and received Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from Oregon State University. He worked 37 years with the Pacific Division of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command at Pearl Harbor and was the Director of the Environmental Engineering Department before retiring in 2006. He enjoys photography as a hobby and is married to Pam. He has two sons, Cory and Colin.
