Kunia Orchid Show and Plant Sale Press Release 2018
 
 

       Announcing the 64th Annual Kunia Orchid Show and Plant Sale at the Leilehua High School on March 23, 24, and 25, 2018.  The Kunia Orchid Show is known as the largest orchid show of the spring season and one of the best flower shows on the island.
 
       The Kunia Orchid Show and Plant Sales includes five local orchid clubs showcasing their very best blooming specimens. With Easter just a week after the show, be sure and pick up beautiful plants to decorate your home from the 22 plant vendors selling an amazing selection of live orchid plants, house plants and the  always popular honohono orchid.  Educational displays focusing on invasive species, cactus and succulents and Sogetsu Ikebana will be present throughout the three day event.

       Special Guest Lecture:  Mr. Thomas Mirenda on “Orchid Diversity” Saturday March 24 at 3:00pm.  Mr. Mirenda is Director of Horticulture and Garden Operations for the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, Hilo.  Mr. Mirenda spent 17 years with the Smithsonian Institution developing educational and ornamental orchid exhibitions.  He writes two columns each month for a national Orchids Magazine and recently co-authored and published The Book of Orchids containing information about 600 orchid species.  This rare opportunity to hear this renowned author is a “not to miss” opportunity for all orchid enthusiasts.  See note below>    
 
       The Kunia Kountry Store will be open offering different kinds of plants, gardening supplies, fertilizers, wooden baskets, hanging wires, plants tags and clips along with homemade baked goods, jellies and much more.  A local expert will be in the Store to answer questions regarding products to meet the needs of your plants. Food booths manned by students will be available during show hours with proceeds benefitting the clubs and athletic department of Leilehua High School.  
 
       One lucky person will be the 2018th Visitor and will receive a basket full of beautiful blooming orchids. There will also be hourly door prizes as well as “Enjoy” products given to everyone as they exit the show while products last.
 
       Spend the day in beautiful Wahiawa with the family at the Kunia Orchid Show at Leilehua Gymnatorium on March 23, 24 and 25.  Show hours are 9 am to 5 pm on Friday and Saturday and 9 am to 4 pm on Sunday.  Admission is free and plant sales will end at 3:00 pm on Sunday.                                     RENOWNED LOCAL ORCHID AUTHOR AND COLUMNIST
TO LECTURE AT SHOW
 
            
 
The “Orchid Diversity” session scheduled for Saturday, March 24 at 3:00 pm will be a presentation by a nationally renowned orchid expert Mr. Thomas Mirenda, the Director of Horticulture and Garden Operations for the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden in Hilo.  Tom started as a Marine Biologist at UH Manoa before pursuing his love of horticulture.  He held positions at the New York Botanical Garden and Brooklyn Botanic Garden before becoming Estate Gardener at the Greentree Estate in Long Island where he solidified his interest in orchids. Mr. Mirenda then spent 17 years with the Smithsonian Institution developing educational and ornamental orchid exhibitions.  He has been a columnist for Orchids Magazine for twelve years and in 2017 co-authored and published The Book of Orchids containing intriguing and unusual information about 600 orchid species.  He will be available to sign limited copies of his book that will be for sale at the show.  This rare opportunity to hear such a renowned author is a “not to be missed” opportunity for all orchid enthusiasts.
